Gallery life

this corner shows the work of Washington artist Jeane Myers and Mayako Nakamura of Japan

a couple who were drawn to the gallery by the work of Italian painter, Roberta Battaglia, speaking with gallery director, Rich Machen and creative director, Allison Machen

a Narberth couple, one of whom purchased a work by Jacqueline M. Cho

During the weekend of November 27 through the 29th, Three Ravens Gallery opened its doors to the public. It was a lot of fun to meet all who stopped in. I am still in awe of how this has come together. I smile a lot being surrounded by the work of friends whom I have had the pleasure of knowing only a short time via the internet yet whose art has personally spoken to me (so much so that in some cases I have purchased a piece).

On Saturday this past weekend it snowed for the first time this season. I drove to the gallery in it and watched through the windows behind our desk as it left a soft white coat on the brick and vine trellised back yard. It was quite lovely, inside and out.

A Gala Art Event

There are less than two weeks to the official public opening of Three Ravens Gallery. We are busy arranging all of the beautiful pieces of art that have been coming in from around the world in recent weeks. It will be a wonderful event and you are all warmly invited to attend. The show will run through early January 2010.

jeunes filles aux lèvres roses

"jeunes filles aux levres roses"
51x69 inches
2009
mixed media on unstretched canvas

The last large piece "coquette" inspired me to continue working on a large scale and on canvas rather than plywood. I used the last bit of canvas I had and despite an attempt to work with colors other than pinks and reds, the painting turned out to contain primarily pinks and reds. The title that came to mind was "rose lipped maidens" which is a favorite line from the movie "Out of Africa" toward the end of the movie when Karen Blixen (played by Meryl Streep) raises a glass in a toast to all the men at the gentleman's club where she was previously not allowed to enter. I decided to translate the title in French. This painting is available in my etsy shop.

Coquette

"Coquette"
mixed media on canvas
72x72 inches
2009

This piece was ready and waiting to come out as soon as I grabbed the paint. After several weeks--maybe that is an exaggeration as I have lost track of when I painted last--I got right to this one yesterday with only minor tweaks today to finish it. It's now off the wall and waiting to be stretched so I can start another one with the last piece of canvas from that roll. I didn't think I'd be able to work on canvas again after finishing the recent commission "Aphrodite's Epiphany" but all is humming along.

tidal wave

"tidal wave"
2009
mixed media on birch plywood
18x48 in.

I painted this weeks ago when I was running on a semi regular basis. With me, running brings on restless leg syndrome and I find myself dealing with an excess of electricity running through my legs. It is something I don't mind so much during the day but I find that at night it can be challenging. I can only attribute this work to what I was going through at the time. I am sure I have painted this sensation of electrical current in other forms, mostly abstract, but this time it expressed itself this way.

Three Ravens Gallery Preview

This Friday evening from 4 pm to 9 pm, Three Ravens Gallery will welcome friends and family into the space where we have arranged artwork collected from around the globe. Some work belongs to the gallery, collected long before Three Ravens was born, other work will be available to purchase. We are anticipating a wonderful and inspiring event. I hope you enjoy the video generously created by UK artist, Sophie Shapiro who is also exhibiting at Three Ravens. Feel free to follow the Three Ravens blog to be informed of current events.

Aphrodite's Epiphany

"Aphrodite's Epiphany"
64x82 inches
mixed media on canvas
2009

This is a commissioned piece that I have been working on for a few months at least. It went through many transformations before settling here. I am very happy with it... it was a freeing work to do.
